Good question. I dont know. Im right handed so I think racing to the left might throw me off a bit.

my guess would be, since you want to be on the inside of the track that you would be able to get closer if you sat on the side closest to the inside of the track. Also, if you hit the wall on the right side of your car, you have a lot less a chance of being hurt, where as if you hit it on the side you are sitting on. take in mind nascar was once run in stock cars, by former moonshiners, so the saftey would have been a lot worse at the time.

Cars built in the US are left drive cars, meaning that we sit on the left when driving. When racing was first developed, they raced in a straight line so it didn't matter. When they started racing around old horse racing tracks and on farm made dirt tracks of the South, it was determined that one can see better in a left-drive car if he is turning left, than if turning right, so that evolved into the way it is done here, we run counter-clockwise. As a Race Director, I've seen races ran backwards, just for fun, and drivers report not being able to see over the car's hood to see the upcoming turns. In South America and Europe, they race turing to the right or clockwise because they have right-drive cars, for the same reason.
