G'day Singwell, Thank you for your question. I think that it would be between Jesus and the Virgin Mary. I think that there are several reasons for this. If an image appears mysteriously, it is likely to be attributed to a god and Christianity is the most popular religion. Further, Jesus and the Virgin Mary are the two most popular figures in Christianity and the most often shown in artworks so mysterious figures are more likely to be described to looking like either Jesus or Mary. In contrast, Islam forbids images of the Prophet Mohammed so you are unlikely to hear of a believer claiming to have a portrait of him. Regards

People have good imaginations- it's like looking at clouds. If your mind is occupied with something, you tend to see images related to that what you focus on. Faces are easily seen, either male of female. People just assume they are the faces of Mary or Jesus- there were no actual photographs of them so people are just guessing that must be what they looked like.

I think people see what they want to see. If one is inclined to look for "signs", it's very likely they will find them. A lot of shapes occur in nature that could be interpreted as looking like a Madonna. I have seen shapes similar to that in clouds, for example. I think there have been such sightings on toasted cheese sandwiches and tortillas as well.

Because the Virgin Mary is extremely important to Catholics.

Aside from being a central figure in the Catholic religion, the image of Mary is often one of a woman in a shapeless gown with her head covered. How hard is it for nature to produce such amorphous shapes? Personally, I think if the Mother of God and Queen of the Universe had something important to impart, she wouldn't show up on the side of a building or on a sandwich to do it.

As a non-catholic christian, we hold Mary in high regard. Catholics hold her even higher! It would be wrong to make an image of Christ/God and pray to it. But, it seems to be OK to pray to other images. Many christians pray in front of a cross. Although the Bible says He was nailed to a "tree." Just don't get caught praying to a golden calf!
