I'm not so worried as to how I will be remembered as to if I will. I can only say that anyone who is sad that I'm gone should stay that way for all time. I would have wanted it that way.

These adapted words of Ralf Waldo Emerson would please me- She laughed often and loved much: She won respect of intelligent people And the affection of children; She earned the approbation of honest critics And endured the betrayal of false friends; She appreciated beauty; and found the best in others; She freely gave of herself; She left the world a little better, with healthy children and grandchildren, A beautiful and loved garden patch, She spoke out about unfair social conditions; She played and laughed with enthusiasm And sung with exultation; She knew that if even one life has breathed a little easier Because she have lived... She would have deemed her life a success!

My clear thinking. However, the same clear thinking shows me that within a few decades of my death, my life's impact on my community, culture, and planet will be minuscule, and my name and work will be forgotten. None of us are remembered for very long. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were 1.6 billion people on the planet. Now there are over 6 billion. Yet how many of the 1.6 billion alive a mere 100 years ago can any of us name? Most of us will not be Thomas Edison or Woodrow Wilson or Marie Curie. I have grown comfortable with my coming anonymity. It places all that I do in perspective, and makes this moment the one that matters most, and the people I'm with more meaningful than any hoped for heritage that others may dream of. This is our moment, and I gladly allow anyone who comes after me to forget me. However, I hope that the lessons we learn together are not lost so readily as our names and faces, for the future can use all the help we can leave behind.
