  • If your ex was ordered by the court to pay support, the terms are outlined in the divorce decree. If it says pay until the kid is 18, for example, he has to pay until the kid is 18. All the court sees is that Person A agreed to pay Person B for the support of Child C. Relinquishing rights over the child is a separate issue. Unless the decree has language that relieves Person A from his obligation upon the adoption of Child C or upon relinquishing his rights to Child C, he's on the hook for the child support. So, the situation now is that Person A has no rights to see the child and has no parental authority over the child but is still legally responsible for supporting the child until you and he get together to amend the divorce decree.
