I haven't heard of getting any benefits for having ADHD. I have it and I am ahhh.. very functional. I think she should have been getting tutoring help for the last few years.

My sister is also functional with ADHD. She doesn't get any benefits (social security wise.) New York school have "504" where she can get extra time on tests with help from a teacher who can read out-loud to her. I don't know if you have 504 where you are, but you should look into it. She also gets tutoring at the school's cost because of ADHD.

That's not going to qualify for social security. You need to find out what other services and grants are available through your school district.

You won't receive SS for ADHD. She pretty much has to be physically disabled or retarded.

Usually ADHD does not get covered as a disability under the SS guidelines, but she should be able to get help in school like an ed service plan and accomadations for future testing and learning. It is sad but many people read at a lower level, but they learn how to compansate this with other skills and adaptive devices ie books on tape. You should encourage your daughter that she can have a great future,despite ADHD, not look for a disability check.

ADHD does not and should not qualify a child for a monthly social security check. I think parents have abused "the system" applying for ADHD when there are people with true disabilites. Look toward the school district for academic help and not towards the government to give you a monthly check for ADHD. A lot of people with ADHD are normal, highly functioning people with a future, not a disability.

This is in response to the answers given so far. The purpose of SSDI is to assist with financial costs of disabilities. ADHD, although considered by most to only be an educational deficiency, can be costly. It does effect children more than just in their education. Hyperactivity Disorder can be difficult for kids. They have a hard time maintaining themselves in various environments, as far as sitting still, being quiet, focusing, etc. The costs of the medication to assist with these problems can be outrageous. A 30 day supply of Ritalin LA 40 is $120+. The cost of counseling for the issues involved racks up as well. I don't think the parents are looking for a hand out of free money. They are looking for help for their kids. You make it sound so easy to get, but trust me, it's not.

So many people abuse the system, yet there are people out there with real physical disabilities that can't get any help. My son has ADHD and will probably have problems and depend on me all his life. I know he will never go to college and may have trouble holding jobs. No one has ever helped us with any of the costly burdens of this illness because we are working people. My advice- get a big life insurance policy in your child's name to give her something to depend on when you die and can no longer support her. That is what I am doing.

i have 4 boys with ADHD but we dont recieve a SSI check. if i didnt have a decent job, i to believe we would have to file for SSI. there are extreme cases of ADHD and 1 of my 3 boys is an extreme case and its not that hes violent, he cannot sit still for long. he does exclent in school on some subjects but others he cannot. we have tried tutors and hes in the 504 program and myself didnt believe in the whole "ADHD" and adderall meds but somehow it really works for my household so god bless a single parent that is dealing with their child with the ADHD disorder because i know how a single parent or parents in general could need the SSI assist. this disorder can be very costly

To all on here like the novelist on the other page. I bet they could qualify for mental retardation benefits. My youngest son has ADHD. Other than a slight learning disability he is fine. He can ride a motorcycle dirt bike like no one at age 10. He taught himself how to ride a peddle bike, his razor scooter when he was 2 and a half years old. Then he taught himself how to ride his Jr 50 dirt bike at 3 years old. Now at 10 he is into a 110 quad and never lets off the throttle (he kicks a@@). Mom of 3 answer was best i seen on here. SSI would help us for his med cost. he is on Adderall Xr 30. It cost $40 a month. Every 3 months he has to go to his specialist for a checkup. that is $20. might not sound like a lot,but put food on top rent, gas,electric, water, sewage, etc. Its a lot when you add it all up. If we fall short for the month its not fair to him to not have his medicine (or to anyone else i may add WOOOOOO!). Also as far as college goes a person with ADD or ADHD will have all the opportunity to go to college. They have it paid for them from maxed grants federal and state. One more thing if you are taking your kid to a psychologist or therapist for ADHD or ADD. Then stop and shame on you. They don't need it the school they are in should have all the assets they need at there disposal. All therapist do is pity your kid and tell you what your doing wrong.
