  • Jesuits are Roman Catholics, so their beliefs are those of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • the Jesuits, or the Society of Jesus, are an order of priests within the Roman Catholic Church, so their beliefs are orthodox Roman Catholic. The founder of their order, St Ignatius of Loyola (a Spaniard) created the Jesuits to "enter upon hospital and missionary work in Jerusalem, or to go without questioning wherever the pope might direct". Because their primary allegiance is to the Pope directly, they have often been called "The Pope's Footsoldiers". Loyola was a knight before entering the priesthood, and he organised the Jesuits in a very military style. There are today about 32 000 of them, involved in a multitude of tasks including " education (schools, colleges, universities, seminaries, theological faculties), intellectual research and cultural pursuits. They are also known in missionary work and direct evangelization, social justice and human rights activities, interreligious dialogue and other 'frontier' ministry. They are present even in countries where there are very few Catholics or where Christianity is altogether banned." They received a lot of bad press for their actions in South America, but in other parts of the world, their ability to cross cultures was greatly respected. The Jesuit Matteo Ricci was a favourite at the Chinese court, dressed in Chinese style and spoke fluent Chinese. He was the first westerner to gain respect from the Emperor and be allowed to advise him. The Jesuit Francis Xavier was known and respected from India, through Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan (where he died). He strongly disagreed with the colonial spanish and portuguese soldiers, and had to leave places several times when their evil behaviour undid the goodwill he had established. Some people associate the Jesuits with the Inquisition, but they were not part of it.
