fake as hell kill the person who sold it to you .just kidding

Real gold stays gold. No greenish buildup.

It depends. There might be some rubbish (skin, hair, dust) that is causing the green build up. Clean it with some jewelry cleanser and see if it comes off clean. Real gold necklaces also have a tag/stamp near the clasp that says "14K". If it says "14K GF" that means gold filled. If it says plated, that means it's a base metal plated with gold.

it is probably gold plated. My husbands gold chain did the same thing and i brought it in because i thought it had to be cleaned but imagine my shock when she told me that it wasnt solid only coated!

May be bronze dipped in cheap gold, and as the gold wore off, the bronze started changing, as it will.

Many apologies, it is fake. I just wanted to chuckle publicly at the category you chose for this. I got a mental vision of you panning gold and coming across a chain. anyway, yes, dear. It is fake (unless it is green paint built up in there or something) clean it. Gold will stay gold always, always.
