  • I'm sure if they are cold enough they will put a coat on, no one needs to force anyone :-)
  • not necessarily. Depending on the child's age and development, they may not have the forethought to realize that they may be cold on a cold day. A warm child, may try to head off to school on a winter day without a coat or gloves, not realizing that 5 minutes from now they'd be freezing.
  • I think it depends on the attitude behind their protest. If they are being defiant, then they should learn that you won't just give in to bad behavior and that you're the one in charge. If you think they really just don't want to wear them, then I'd consider letting them go out with out them, but bring them along just so they will be available once the kid realizes you were right. :)
  • I've read enough stories about kids who nearly froze to death in Northern tier states to believe that. I've read story after story of teens wanting to be fashionable in winter for an evening out and counting on the car's heater to keep them warm, only to end up stranded in a blizzard, getting out to walk and dying or nearly dying on someone's doorstep. And it isn't only kids, adults have been known to be that stupid too.
  • If they are 14...yes, they will - or not, on their own. If they are 4.....no. It is a parents job to override the kids in this case and insist they are well-clothed. Anyhthing else is neglect,.
  • Yeah they will on their own.
  • If the children are young, yes you should force it.
  • Yes because they may not be aware of the danger of windchill or underestimate how running around can make you feel artificially warm. It is the parents job to care for children since they don't know enough yet to make their own decisions.
  • It depends on age/ temperature. Some parents bundle their kids in winter wear at 50F, (and I've seen it at 65F), which is not cold even for walking at a moderate pace, let alone running around. If it is below or close to freezing, kids should at least have a coat and gloves, but the option to remove them if they get too hot.
