Why isn't "www" pronounced "sextuple-yoo"? After all, a triple double is a sextuple.

Because we use the Latin alphabet. What we write as the character "U" was written by the Romans as "V." So, technically "W" is a double "U" as U was originally written. +5 for the interesting question. :)
