Can you only learn Muay Thai in Thailand? Also do you have to compete in tournaments like you have to in Tai-kwon-do for Muay Thai, or is it just similar to the master and pupil style of teaching?

There are lots of schools. I studied in a school near Khao San for six hours a day. It was cheap and I learned a lot and became the fittest I have ever been. This is a class session though, private tuition is a lot more expensive.

... that sort of depends ... there are many schools outside of Thailand that offer to teach what they call Muay Thai Kick Boxing ... since each teacher is different, it is possible that some teachers may insist on tournaments while other instructors may shun and even discourage the competitions ...

Think more along the lines of a boxing club, rather than a martial arts class.

Most Thailand gyms are not luxurious.... you will sweat and sweat...and hurt.. :-D
