  • Reinstall the operating system. There is probably a "recovery" partition on the hard disk, or you can call dell and request a recovery disc. At any rate, you don't want a used computer that hasn't even been wiped clean. Lord knows what kind of junk the previous owner had installed or downloaded. Best to start over with a clean slate.
  • If it's a BIOS password, you can reset it by unplugging the computer and removing the circular lithium ion batter from the motherboard. If its a password in windows, there is a mainstream program out there called "Offline NT Password and Registry Editor," but it's linux based so if you're not good with computers, I wouldn't recommend it. If all else fails, take it to your local Geek Squad and they'll be able to remove for free or a $29 charge. Good Luck.
  • Regular password go to safe mode F8 while booting. After everything is up go to control panel> User accounts> click on change password. Leave new password space blank. BIOS is more complicated, its a BIOS password if Windows won't load beyond the boot sequence. For this Tap F10 while computer is booting, using the arrow key go to BIOS setup. Look in left hand box you'll see the word Security, scrool down to that and hit enter. That opens up the security settings set by the previous owner. Click on unlock password and hit enter, scroll down to boot sequence, and click on change password, leave blank when it prompts for new password. Hit enter after each blank. It should say somewhere there how to save your settings Save them then reboot the computer. I hope this works for you.
  • restore to factory default...there should be an option at startup
