  • I'm not sure those will catch on at all, and if they do, not any time soon. DVD was so successful because it was a massive leap ahead of VHS. The difference between DVD and Blu-Ray/HD-DVD is minimal, and you have to have a pretty expensive setup to enjoy it. On top of that, the fact that there are going to be two standards is going to ward a lot of people off... too many people got burned by the whole Beta thing. And on top of THAT, Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs cost at least $30, $10 more than an average new-release DVD. I'm betting only an extreme minority of people are going to be buying into the new formats this decade. The PS3 might help things along a bit, but not enough to replace DVDs.
