  • I don't really have any superstitions about protecting against bad luck. But I do things for good luck like wish when I get the chance, throw pennies in ponds, and cross my fingers. Crossing my fingers is kind of like praying for me.
  • I often wonder if superstitions are actually based on fact but just lost in translation. For example: "I'm looking for a four leaf clover." "You'll be lucky if you find one of them!" i.e. the good luck is in finding one in the first place because they are so rare. Similarly: "Ouch! I was walking under a ladder and the painter's bucket fell on my head." "Well, that's just your bad luck, isn't it? If you hadn't walked under the ladder but kept well clear, there's no way the bucket would've fallen on your head." Or if you trip over a cat in the middle of the night, it was just bad luck that it was black so you couldn't see it. Does anyone know if this applies or not?
