I would say Mahatma Gandhi.He was a true peacemaker and leader.He single handedly took back India from Britain,without the use of violence from Indian people.He lived simply and though as Prime Minister could have lived in a palace,he lived like the poor of his country.He was never a hypocrite and western politicians have a lot to learn from him.

Mahatma Gandhi is the greatest person I know of to have lived. However, I am of the belief that the greatest person to ever have lived is probably an unknown who sacrificed greatly and died (or still lives) in relative obscurity.

Carl Sagan. He had a brillian sceintific mind, but more importantly he was a fantastic, honest, good human being, he respected everyone's ideas yet constantly probed for truth and reason. He didn't buy into anyone's bull.

I can't think of a religious character that is both great and known to have lived. But excluding them...? Tough to say. . Any who faced personal risk to push forward the sum of human knowledge - Galileo, for instance.
