Going back in time to something you remember that is happy, as you suggest, is excellent in calming your mind during times of stress or sadness. It sure beats using prescription drugs and alcohol. Also, it is well known that exercise works against depression. As a child, going into the first day of summer vacation without school, was exhilarating. To reflex upon a task that you personally accomplished is one of the greatest satisfactions of life. My own example: Success in a business venture, success in sports, 300 game in bowling, and a hole in one in golf. Also, probably most important, doing something good for friend or family that really helped.

Yes. I think back to a day last November (The 27th, if memory serves) when I spent the whole day and half the night talking with a good friend about mainly happy things, and the conversation eventually came to something wonderful that has changed my life. My emotions around that memory run hot and cold, but it's still the happiest memory I have.
