Under current policy, gay men and women can enlist in the United States military so long as they remain "closeted" as per the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy instituted by former President Clinton in 1993. As of 2010, President Obama is attempting to repeal the act to allow openly gay men and women to serve in the military.
