Why has the Catholic Church been so slow to act on allegations of abuse by priests?

They are more than allegations, there have been many court cases with paedo priests going to jail.

Because they got so used to protecting their own at any cost and just can't break the habit.

The church isn't in the business of criminal prosecution, it is in the business of the forgiveness of sin. They've been dealing with in-house wrong doing by their own for centuries. . I believe the way they tend to deal with such cases is foolish, but their position - that people who sin can be redeemed, is consistent with their ethos.

They tended to brush the allegations under the carpet as they were thinking of the reputation of the church.I think some of the Bishops are still reluctant too get shut of perverted priests and only do so when their names are made public.

Disgusting!! The American church knew they had a serious problem. They decided that they would allow certain things, if it meant protecting the institution as a whole. Why anyone is still giving these people money is beyond me!

because they care more about protecting there priests and there reputation than they do about the safty of children.
