Probably a take off as a more acceptable phase than the use of the other F word that is often used.

On the set of the movie The Conversation Gene Hackman was getting upset and he told a stagehand to stop farting around. Everyone laughed. And it spread from there. I know that doesn't sound believable but that's where that expression came from.
