My grandma used to pick cotton from the time she was 5 or so...It really took its toll on her skin. I have picked and paid to get my cherries.. I have picked fruit to donated to a charity...it makes for an interesting day...if you have friends with you, the job is over in a heartbeat...but, I sure feel for the ones I see working out in the hot sun picking the onions and potatoes..makes me grateful for what I have.

I have never done that myself. But I do pay out the labor for picking fruits, vegetable and even flowers.

I never picked them out of the garden but when I was a kid, my cousin & I took some vegtables out of my grandma's freezer(that she had frozen from her garden)& we set up a vegetable stand out on the road to make some money. we laugh about this to this day. It was a country road with very few houses, we did sell a couple to the old man down the way. I think he felt sorry for us!

When I was a kid a strawberry farmer used to come and pick up our whole family in the back of a flat bed truck along with others also and we would get paid for every quart of berries picked. I think I ate more than I put in the basket. We did the same when potatoes were ripe, he would run a disker over them turning them up and we would all run up like starving rats to get all we could and put them into toe sacks. And we did a lot of foraging for black berries at a place called upalicka (pronounced you-pu-lick-u)pond. Thanks for the question, it bring back fond memories.
