Why do people insist on quoting certain scriptures to prove a point but ignore the ones that contradict the point they are trying to prove? Shouldn't the Bible be taken as a whole and not bit by bit?

Why? Most of us have a preconceived set of beliefs. (Often, these are based upon what we've been told the Bible says.) Whether or not a person will admit they MAY have been mistaken in their beliefs is a true test of meekness. I mean "meekness" in the sense of being 'teachable'. If an individual honestly wants to understand the Bible, they must allow the book to interpret itself. (What I mean is, if you come across verse "B" and it contradicts your understanding of verse "A", then you need to adjust your understanding. This generally involves paying close attention to surrounding verses, and sometimes 'word studies' into the original language words and all of their possible meanings.)
