That really depends on the relationship. It is *extremely* rare that a given couple can fulfill EVERY one of their partner's needs. Most often, our culture dictates that the unfulfilled suffer and cope. Call it settling, call it compromise, what have you. In other relationships, it is apparent right off the bat that while you are mostly compatible, you are not 100% perfect for each other. Most relationships go on for a while before you realize that you do not have Mr/Ms Perfect, and I sincerely doubt that anybody could pin down a decent average length of time before this happens. The important thing in the latter two cases is that you discuss your options openly with each other. Maybe you'll do the same thing most Americans do and suffer/settle. Maybe you'll agree to an 'open' relationship, but there is no telling when this could/should happen. It could be a week, it could be many years.
