  • At the age of 12 Louis Braille (1809-1852) obtained a sample from a retired soldier of a early precurser to the Braille system called "Night writing" which consisted of 12 raised dots. Louis worked on refining his own version, consisting of 6 dots, and completed the Braille system by the time he was 15 years old. He then published the first braille book in 1829 at the age of 20.
