  • My tax attorney told me that indeed if a parent provides 50% or more of the child's needs (this includes room board, food, medical care, schooling, and other items) then that child is a dependent. IF the non-relitive friend is providing room board, and food and not recieving at least reembursement, then the parent is likely to be audited. The internet is a VERY BAD place to get answers to questions like this EXCEPT at www.IRS.gov Every situation is different, and therefore all "answers" are just a good guess.
