  • Wait until you're ready to tackle the work or expense of refinishing your wood floors, and then start ripping! Unfortunately, putting carpet on top of wood floors tends to damage the floors somewhat, and they will almost certainly need some attention to be decent again. At worst, you can buy carpets which aren't sky blue to recover them.
  • well if u whant to get a new carpet and u could ahve termites in the wood so u shoud any way
  • DO you have an area,k like in a corner or under a large piece of furniture that you could lift up and check to see how the floor is doing and what kind of wood flooring? Even if the floor is really bad as was one floor in my friends home, we just sanded it lightly and painted it, did it in checkerboard on the diagonal, ignoring the plank directions. Even painted a 'rug' with fringe under her dining room table. It was great looking and easy to care for. It looked like a beautiful antique floor:-)
  • Sorry everyone - but I say RRrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!! I say go for it! You don't know what's there until you look. You might be surprised! You'll have to make sure to get all the tacks or staples out and definitely there is sanding in your future but in my opinion even a not so perfect wood floor is WAY better than a carpet you don't like. And if it needs work then do the work - if you don't have the cash now - you will have motivation to save some. Also change is fun.
  • This is a year- plus later -- I found this question researching the best place to get solid oak planks for flooring -- but I have to say GO FOR IT -- if the wood underneath doesn't look great, at least it will be wood, and it will lead you to new ways of decorating. Have fun! I bet you did -- how about an update?
  • We had nice wood floors under our carpet that we did not discover until we were going to move. We then had them sanded and shellaced. It was great. Just pull up a corner and take a peep. One that has a piece of furniture sitting on it. Good luck.
  • I vote for pulling it up.
