<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: It Boosts Circulation
All massage is aimed at relieving stress by increasing blood flow to a designated area. In the scalp, stress can manifest as tightness that restricts blood flow, which in turn can be detrimental to hair. Scalp massage can ease this tension and help keep hair follicles healthy. It also can loosen and get rid of dead cells.
On the Other: Circulation Isn't Usually the Problem
Most hair loss is genetic and there is no evidence to suggest that regular scalp massage will prevent it. In fact, the only FDA-approved treatment for balding is minoxidil (Rogaine), but even this is approved for male pattern baldness, not a receding hairline. The American Cancer Society does report that daily massage with essential oils effectively treated hair loss from alopecia areata, but this type of baldness affects only 0.1 percent to 0.2 percent of people.
Bottom Line
Aging and genetic triggers are primarily to blame for a receding hairline and there is currently no scientifically proven method to treat this condition, including scalp massage.
