Potassium permanganate has multiple uses. In water treatment plants it can remove certain minerals, control the growth of certain organisms, and control odors. The antimicrobial properties of potassium permanganate also make it useful as a skin treatment.
Removal of Mineral
Potassium permanganate causes iron and manganese to precipitate from water, a property that helps to soften hard water.
Controlling Odor
Potassium permanganate can remove odor and taste from musty smelling water, making it more drinkable. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the dose range for water treatment is 0.25 to 20 milligrams of permanganate per liter of water.
Controlling Byproducts
Adding potassium permanganate can lower levels of undesirable byproducts like chloroform in water treatment. Permanganate also has disinfectant effects against bacteria and viruses.
Controlling Marine Organisms
Potassium permanganate effectively inhibits the growth of adult zebra mussels and juvenile Asiatic clams, both nuisance organisms which have invaded domestic waters.
Antiseptic
Potassium permanganate in liquid form can act as a disinfectant and antiseptic. Application to the skin can protect against infections.
