  • Have you already tried to start the system with the boot linus cd in? Will your system boot off of it?
  • Check that your computer boots from a CD before the hard drive. Insert the installation CD of whatever distro you are going to use, switch on the computer and follow the instructions. If you want to you could format the drive first.
  • I would recommend the Ubuntu distribution as one of the best for a new Linux user. Hopefully you have access to another PC with an internet connection, a CD burner, and CD recording software capable of burning an ISO image to a CD. Boot the laptop from the Ubuntu CD, and follow the onscreen instructions - it's pretty friendly. Alternatively you could look at www.pendrivelinux.com for ideas on booting Linux from a flash drive.
