Jesus was born to Mary, of the tribe of Judah. That is her connection to David's line. It is thought that perhaps Jesus resembled his mother physically in apperance. This was a good question. Do not hesitate to ask.

He's the adopted son of Joseph, the begotten son of God and the natural son by virgin birth (not parthenogenesis) of Mary. Parthenogenesis is a natural process in which the offspring are always female, and only occurs in lower animals.

The Holy Spirit placed Jesus in the womb of Mary, who was a virgin. Jesus was born from her in human form (although he also retained his Godly attributes as well), so he was literally the son of Mary. Their are two geneaologies in the New Testament; one in Matthew, and one in Luke. The geneaology in the book of Matthew traces the lineage of Joseph through the King David. The genealogy of the book of Luke traces it through Mary back to David (and beyond). This would have been unusual to trace through a woman, but in light of the virgin birth it is expected and is highlighted by Luke's statement "son of Joseph, OR SO IT WAS THOUGH". God cursed the line of Solomon because of his lack of faithfulness (1 King 11:9-13), which is the line that Joseph came from, and so the Messiah came through the line of Nathan, one of David's other sons (and on down through Mary the mother of Jesus).

I know my answer will not be appreciated by conservative Christians, but: here you will see that the myth of virgin birth and heavenly Jesus come in contrast with the claim of Christianity (Messiah must be a descendent of David). I think Jesus was a really man like us, later some myths are imported from Greek and Roman mythology to make Jesus acceptable for them. Old Testament never says that the Messiah will be literary Son of God, comes from heaven, the second member of Godhead….

His mother, Mary, was a direct descendant of King David.

If you read the first chapter of the book of Mat. you'll find that His lineage is traced through his mother, Mary.

I love Jesus, but I dont beleive he is Gods son. God created the Earth from his universe and then created all living things. I dont know who would have been his dad, but the start of his generation as with all was created by GOD. (my belief, please do not be offended)

1Chron 17:11-16 And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; SEED from SONS * I was raised Baptist. And I am now questioning what I was TAUGHT to believe. Ever sense I picked up one of my Bibles and started reading it on my own. And I find it scary, knowing I will go to Hell if I don't beleive the Bible is the word (or inspired)of God.

It doesnt work, now does it. We read things and all of a sudden and we believe them. How gullible are people really? Answer: Look at every single one of our belief systems, all controlled by brainwashing methods.

Ok- as far as father is concerned, it is God. However, that is spiritual. Upon entering the flesh, he obtained human fleshly parents- they couldn't be God because God isn't in the flesh... Eenie Meenie Miney Moe...thus, Mary and Joseph. Almost like the concept of a surrogate mother.

Some of the references to Jesus in the New Testament when he as an adult show that his unusual birth was a cause of wonder, "is not this the son of Mary"- in Jewish culture that implied illegitimacy- small-town memories of how she was PG before the wedding. In Jewish law also, one is Jewish if one's mother is Jewish. The answers above from Mt. and Lk. are correct. He was born in Bethlehem, city of David where Joseph registered, Luke seems to know nothing of that, so he is conceived of Mary in Nazareth, which was the location of a branch of David's family, which gave the town its name in Hebrew, and so a true descendant of David. The other posts which deny his being born of the Virgin, and is God's Only Son by nature, and so Joseph's natural son (some cynics say that she was impregnated by a soldier in that crossroads town at that time) are as old as the New Testament itself. Carl Jung's psychology and the extensive study of myth by Joseph Campbell's shows that our souls/spirits anticipated the basic Myths in every culture, mostly independent of travel goegraphy, migration etc. so that we could see their fulfillment by Faith in Christ. That was NOT the reverse where sceptics accuse the Church of imposing eternal life and divine sonship retroatively onto Jesus in the Bible. The stories of snakes, the womb-tomb cycle, eternal origin and birth, sin/evil, a conquering hero who leaves home, suffers and comes back to win by being chosen, "anointed" as in David's story, Jesus' story, and The Lion King film, Faust, the Wicked Witch, Willie Wonka's first Chocolate Factory story ( not the silly-ass version by Johnny Depp) are all foreshadowings of the JESUS MYTH which is GOD'S FULFILLMENT of what is implanted in our psyches and are manifest in Mythology. It takes Faith, a gift of God to believe in the Jesus story which is beyond reason but does not contradict reason and uses reason to sort it out.

Jesus was descended from David on at least one of his lines, if not both. Most scholars accept that the Matthean genealogy is Joseph's and the Lucan one Marys. This would accord with the fact that Luke interviewed Mary (how else would he know the things that were hidden in her heart?) The descents are legit becuase Jesus was the son of Mary (ie he came from her womb) and he was acknowledged as Joseph's son by Joseph. NOW I don't mean to be picky, but the questioner has put this question under Christianity, so is clearly expecting an answer that accords with mainline Christian belief. Why, then, are people answering this from their own little tangents? Had the questioner wanted to know these tangents, he/she would have put the question elsewhere.

If you read through the bible more closely, you'll notice that the words son of God are used many times. A son of God is anyone who is written in the Book of Life. Or has believed without seeing.

Jesus is the son of Mary; she became pregnant by the action of the Holy Spirit. Both Mary and her husband Joseph (who is Jesus' stepfather or guardian)were from the House of David. A good book to read (in addition to the Gospels) is Christ the Lord, Out of Egypt by Anne Rice. This is a novel about Jesus' childhood and she talks a lot about the extended family.

i'm not quite sure but dont it say somewhere in that so called great book that we are all related in some way

In order for him to have a bloodline to King David, he must have inherited DNA from at least one of his parents, who themselves must have been descended from King David. Since God, not Joseph, is supposed to be the father, then Mary must have been that descendent of King David. But this requires that some of Mary's DNA was used in construction of the Jesus fetus. I'd always pictured the event as the holy spirit placing a fully formed fetus in her womb, but I suppose it could have used some of Mary's DNA in forming it. Maybe it even used one of her eggs (and combined it with its own sperm?). That's funny to imagine. There's some debate about whether the alleged virgin nature of Mary is actually just from a translation error. Allegedly, the original word (parthenos) had multiple possible meanings, only one of which was "virgin" (also "maiden", "girl", and "unmarried woman").

know your medicine : the word of God was spoken to save us .. the word became flesh by the power of the Holy Spirit in the womb of mary a descendant of David. the blood of mother and baby never mingle , so the baby was never tainted with human sinful blood ..there fore born "without "sin. While Mary was the surrogate mother of the flesh child she was in no way the mother of the Spirit whom the child's body housed ,for the Spirit of God is eternal .. the immortal came before the mortal . hence the the term mary the mother of God is blasphemy .
