Nobody invited Bob Beamon to see his record broken and his record stood longer than those set by Spitz. (And Beamon didn't whine about it to the press) The IOC will not invite former record holders to return to see the anticipated breaking of the record for a number of reasons -- mainly because the record might not be broken, but also because the IOC has worked for many years to shrink the size of the Games and starting any trend that would increase numbers would be counter productive. The sort of angle you are going for is a human interest story best left to the maudlin production style of a broadcasting company in America.

From what i have read, Spitz is a bit of a dink. He expected to be invited and is now pissed. NBC might have thought he wouldn't be a good interview.

Yeah. Right. "Say Mark would you like to come down here and see this punk kid smash all your records and make everyone forget about you?".

I think it would be a nice gesture.

They did once a few Olympics ago when they were pretty sure his record would be surpassed but it wasn't. So maybe they thought it would be a washout again.

I think Mark Spitz should have been invited but did the Chinese know that Phelps would win so many medals. The US Olympic Committee could have invited him . There are so many empty seats that it is embarrassing. We were told that the Games were a sell out but the tickets were much too expensive for local people.

Yes, a good point! unless they asked and he declined, they should have had him being asked/talking about it on TV...
