  • Where in the world is sumo wrestling actually practiced?
  • ... possibly, but doubtfully ... there is just a lack of enthusiasts so the popularity is low ...
  • Only Greco Roman style which is already in. A Sport has to be in as a trial before instituted into the full Olympics and Wresting is not in the years lists.
  • Actually sumo is practiced in over 80 countries. Here in the US we have the United States Sumo Federation (USSF) and we send sumotori to the World's each year along with hosting various competitions throughout the US. Sumo is becoming more popular around the world and Japan has "lightened" up on the rules in order to possibly get sumo into the Olympics. The first thing they did was open the sport up to men and women. In Japan is was long understood that women could not even stand on the dohyo. Allowing women into the sport was a huge change. Another concession was to allow weight classes. One other was allowing individuals to wear "shorts" underneath the mawashi. (Women are allowed to wear a one piece leotard and an optional t-shirt along with the mawashi. If you'd like to know more about sumo in the US and/or would like to try it I would be more than happy to guide you in the right direction. I received my black belt in sumo from the Japan Sumo Kyokai and have since made the rank of 3rd degree black belt through the USSF. My e-mail is tkzabel@satx.rr.com
