I need to know exactly how to cut a stem off my rubber plant to start a new growth. Do I cut it and put in water to start the root or do I just put in the dirt so it will continue to grow?

Neither -- cut one of the branches about 2/3 of the way through. Then surround the cut with a handful of damp moss or mulch and tape it in to place. Allow the dressing to remain on the cut for three to six weeks, keeping it damp the entire time. At the end of that time the cut branch will have sent out small roots in to the moss. Finish cutting the branch the remaining 1/3 and use that branch to start a new rubber tree.
