it depends on how you feel personally. some witches will cast a circle before doing something as simple as praying. a good standard to go by is this: if you're asking another entity (deity,spirit) to assist you, cast a circle to let the called entity in and keep unwanted energies out. if you're just using YOUR OWN PERSONAL POWER, i don't see a need to cast a circle. but, if it feels right, do it. it couldn't hurt and it most definitely won't make your spell ineffective.

No, you don't need to. You don't, in fact, ever "need" to cast a circle. However, I do believe that you should. The circle is a sacred, safe place filled with positive, protective energy. It is a place where you feel emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically safe. I believe this is important for your state of mind. Casting a circle also helps to put you into a ritual state of mind, which is very important. Some say that casting a circle before any magical rite contains the energy within that circle. They then let it build up and release it all at a single point in time. In the end, though, it is up to you.
