Why do some people spell Alsatian with -on instead of -an? To me, alsation would be the act of alsating, or the feeling of being alsated (what?). We don't spell Indian, Austrian, Australian or Canadian with -on, so why spell Alsatian that way?

Perhaps because most people don't think of it as meaning something that comes from a particular place, but simply as a breed of dog. -
