    The name Israel has its origins in the Bible. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob Jews are followers of Judaism, or according to Jewish law they are people with a Jewish mother or converts to Judaism. The Jewish people are sometimes known as the Israelites. The Modern State of Israel is a country with freedom of religion - which means that Israeli citizens can be any religion. The Modern State of Israel is the only Jewish majority state in the world. Its has been under constant attack from surrounding nations since its inception.
