  • Who are we to decide that they should not live? And where is the border between "severely" and "not so severely"? Do you know that? I do not.
  • Everyone should live reguardless of what is wrong with them.
  • It is not my place to decide who dies and who doesnt. Everyone deserves a chance at life.
  • Because many deformities become evident by the time someone (usually the parents) already love that child.
  • Why not? Are they less human than I?
  • I'm afraid that is a question that many people will be afraid to answer with honesty.
  • Psh, there's plenty of space in the attic. Hey, I'm all for mercy killings, but making anyone's life "illegal" seems a bit absurd.
  • i'm not anyone to decide who lives and who dies, i think they have as much right as we do to live, just because their bodies are different from ours it doesn't mean they are better dead. seriously they are the same as everyone, ugh it just makes me angry to know that theres still people in this world that discriminate others for how they look. i mean why shouldn't they be allowed to live?
  • My opinion? is that questions like this should get peoples butts thrown in the PB.....Hey you asked. Oh yea, i almost forgot to answer your question....Everyone has a right to live, and not just including, but especially them.
  • I'm in doubt to be honest.. I don't think they would ever get a good life (see my comment to Cuttergirl's answer), and they would be dead in a few hours of days if it weren't for modern technology. Just as I'm pro euthanasia, I think I believe it's best to, so to say, let nature take it's course, but only in the most extreme cases where they'll never get anything even close to a normal life...
  • I don't think the 'Bag is big enough to carry all the flak you're gonna catch for this one, Bud.
  • 'be allowed to live?' I don't care for the wording of the question, frankly. I will say that if I knew my child was going to be severely deformed BEFORE I gave birth, I would probably opt to abort. If we had no idea and I gave birth to a severely deformed child, I would have to think long and hard on the quality of life I would be able to offer them. I may opt to adopt. Either way, it is a topic that I don't care to think about any longer.
  • I had a son who is severely disable both mentally and physically. He was born brain injured and all parts of his physical body had to be trained in "Patterning" classes when he was a little boy. I have learned so many good things from him. I've learned to love absolutely unconditionally, not to judge people by the way they look, learned a lot of patience, that there is more than one way to complete a task, there are other ways of seeing and being, that he enjoys his life even though he go's about it in different ways. I think of how many ways my growth would have been stunted if I had not had my son and raised him to be the man that he is today.
  • Nobody ever says when their pregnate "if this child is severely deformed I'll have the same reaction as if its healthy..." People do say "I don't care what the sex of the child is as long as its healthy," though. When I reach that part of my life and a child is occuring...I'd want a healthy baby. Severely deformed as in what? An extra toe? I could deal with an extra toe, but if its something life threatening then no, I'd opted for an abortion.
  • There is nothing wrong with being "severely deformed". There is, however, something wrong with person's attitude if he or she judges people for what they look like.
  • Once here that would be murder, wouldn't it? If it could be discovered in utero in the earliest of stages, then I'd be torn..the quality of life for such a child would probably be nil, unless the intellectual capability were untouched..don't know how or if that can be determined early on. If the brain were functioning and the child could have some kind of quality of life, then of course I would want him/her to survive. Hard question..difficult choices! :(
  • having worked with a lot of severly handicapped(physically and mentally) children i know that everyone is the same inside..we all have the same feelings. they should be "allowed" to live just like any of us. they have a real value in the world and something to give.
  • i think that if they are fighting to be here then they have every right to live, i have looked after a severly deformed child and he was an absolute joy, to be around.
  • Anyone who is given life is entitled to it and I believe that life begins at conception. An unpopular belief, I know, but it is mine. If deformed children were not "allowed" to live, where would it stop? What criteria would be used to determine what was severe enough to not be "allowed" to live and who would determine it? Then what of the people who are badly disfigured or suffer brain injury due to accidents or illness..are they to be "allowed" to live? Sorry, but that sounds a little too much like Hitler's dream of a "perfect" society to me.
  • It's a slippery slope - who gets to decide what constitutes deformity and by which yardstick are degrees of severity determined?
