Yes, I think geography plays a pivotal role in a person's initial beliefs. By parental and social example, people absorb what they see around them and follow the codes presented to them. Sometimes people go their whole lives without realizing that other ways of thinking or believing are possible. Education, television, movies, the internet and reading can expose us to other belief systems in many cases. There are those people who question rather than accepting that which is presented to them, but often they find themselves isolated from the larger community.
