  • I got mine when i was in Grade 7. I didn't even want it! My dad surprised me with it.
  • We got cell phones for the kids when they started to drive. I just can't see a need for a cell phone before then.
  • My son got one in 6th grade but only because it was an extra $10 a month and I trusted him...mistake though because he kept leaving it places. Never lost it, just left it. I only let him use it at home for texting (which is free or he wouldn't have it) or when he goes down the block so I can call him to come home.
  • 13 YEARS OLD.
  • I agree that is WAY too early. I still don't have a cell phone and i don't see why i need one they are too addictive. When i was in highschool my friend would always text and lost his footing in school to a point where his GPA dropped below 2.5. HE WAS STUPID. I would discourage getting them the phone.
  • I was 15 and my phone bill was capped so I couldn't spend more than a certain amount. Depends where you live; could be good for security reasons, but then again most kids don't want it for that reason. I don't think anyone under 12 should have one really, don't see the point. Although peer pressure can become overwhelming...
  • i didnt get one until about 4 years ago, and i was 18, then i even gotten it taken away because my phone bill was overf 200. haha, so i just got a new one this year YAY and im 21! haha and no my mom isnt strict at all haha :)
  • I was actually 18. But I'll tell you all I was 14 just to seem a little "cooler".
  • It depends on what kind of lives the kids lead, really. If your sons go out with friends after school often, or belong to some club/s that keep them occupied beyond when they'd normally be away from the house, then they might actually need cell phones. But if their typical day, like that of most 5th graders, basically consists of going from home to school and back again, them owning a cell phone would be pretty ridiculous.
  • I was 34 and in the Army. I needed one so I could be reached by my supply sergeant.
  • I just got my first one a few months ago (I'm 39).
  • I got mine when i was about 11 i think I started to go out for most of the day and it was easier for my parents to stay in contact with me.
  • Get it for him, but make him pay for part of the bill, like for texting and downloads.
  • Until a child is able to pay his / her own cell phone ; they do not need one ... it is a "Status Symbol" ... There are plenty of landline phones , no matter where you go ... +5
  • I was 10 or 11 and i lived on a farm where there was no service. I had to stand on a chair, begind my wardrobe on 1 leg to get service. hhhhmm i still did it tho just to use it lol.
  • I'm eighteen and I finally caved in and bought my first cellphone yesterday. I've been the black sheep though--all of my friends have had one for years.
  • I don't know about a 5th grader, but a teenager should definitely have one, especially if they spend time away from home with friends or the like. Payphones are a critically endangered species these days, and cells are needed for emergencies and to keep in contact with the kid. They didn't have cellphones that were as cheap and reliable when I was a kid/teenager. I didn't get mine until around 22 or so.
  • i got one when i was 12, and i'm 18 now. i felt like i got one very late. i've seen kids in 2nd grade with cellphones. the average age to have one has gotten younger for sure.
  • I got my son one of the prepaid phones when he was in 6th grade. Its nice because we can always get ahold of each other. If he's at his friend's house, I can text him or call him and tell him to come home for dinner. Or, if he needs to reach me, he can. We get the prepaid minutes, because we learned our lesson the hard way with the older one . . ..
  • Worst mistake you could make is give them a cellphone. You will realize this when you receive the phone bill for $500 dollars. They are too young to be responsible for the phone and how to use it. A cellphone is not a toy.
  • I'm eighteen and just got mine a month ago, but I hate phones, just hearing one ring makes me wanna scream :) but I do think 5th grade is ridiculous. What could they need it for, there's no chance of breaking down in their car anytime soon or anything like that, they just want one to be cool. I say make em wait :)
  • just got my first. I'm 32. Got by just fine travelling all over the world and my country from a very young age just by land lines...wow, amazing, eh? It makes parents lazier and less diligent. Instead of watching for trouble, the onus is on the kid to alert the parent of trouble. I wouldn't trust an 11 year old to know trouble if it hit him right in the ass.
  • I was grown when they became affordable. If they want them bad enough, get prepaid phones and let them use their allowance to load them or do special chores to earn minutes. If they lose them, use the same process to replace.
  • My 1st one I got was when I was 24, needed it for a job
  • It is very important tho. These days its actually necesary. To keep in touch, to know where he is, to call you when a crazy person follows him from school ect. Make it part of his allowance, or chore duty. Give him a certain amount of credit and a duty he must do to make up for it. Goooo ooonnnnnn get him the phone Dad.
  • think i was 17 or 18. heard it's not even healthy for developing bodys to be exposed to excessive cell phone use, but then it is nice to be able to check on your kids at the same time. it's up to the parent to decide i guess. Good luck!
