Simply put, both lines run through David, both Mary's family and Joseph's family were of the tribe of Judah.

Consider for a moment, in all of the attacks made on Jesus by the religious leaders of his day ( The Pharisees and the Sadducees who were very well versed in the law), there is no record of any of them ever claiming that Jesus had not descended from David.
    Why?
Because the genealogy records were available for inspection at the Temple in Jerusalem until the Romans burnt the Temple later in the year 66 C.E.
If Jesus were a fraud, they would have been able to easily expose him.

Jesus lineage is found at both Matthew 1:1-16; and at Luke 3:23-38

Evidently Matthew traces Jesus' legal lineage through His foster father Joseph, whereas Luke traces it back through the natural lineage of His mother Mary. Matthew records that an angel appeared to Joseph, Jesus' foster father.
Luke tells of the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary, Jesus' mother. Similarly, Matthew tells of the astrologers coming to visit the child Jesus, ";the king of the Jews", bringing costly gifts, whereas Luke tells of humble shepherds being invited to see the newborn Savior.

People used to fuss about "That immaculate conception, that';s impossible".
Now look at the embryonic technology that man has developed to make conception so much easier for couples.
If men can do such modern things that a few years ago would have been considered "impossible", why couldn't our Grand Creator bring his Son Jesus to life on earth as a man this way?

One of the Gospels traces Messiah's lineage through the legal (step)father, the other one through the mother, so that both physically and legally Jesus was the descendant of David.

The author of the Gospel of Matthew traces the Davidic line to David, acting as if he were Jesus' natural father. Under Jewish law of that time, by being wed Joseph would be considered the father even if the child were conceived by the seed of another.

The author of Luke traces Mary back to the house of David.

    Hyperion is back in China

Short answer - he wasn't. That bit was made up by the author of the gospel of Matthew who was clearly obsessed with linking Jesus into any OT prophecy he could find. The messiah coming from the seed of Jesse (the line of David) was one such prophecy. He even fabricated the whole story of the massacre of the innocents to satisfy an obscure piece of prophecy that was actually nothing to do with the messiah.

Yes.Mary was from the line of David as was Joseph. So Mary being his mother and from the line of David would make Jesus also from the line of David.

Mary came from the lineage of David, thus making Jesus from the lineage of David.

You know I honestly have asked this question to alot of people. And all I could come up with is. Behold the power of adoption. How are you now called a son of God when you began to serve him. Jesus was an example from His birth all the way to His death. In my personal opinion. I feel that lineage has a lot more to do then just being born. I think it also has to do with who influences and shapes you. In this case I believe Jesus demonstrated alot of Joseph attributes. He was know through out the land as the Joseph the Carpenters' son.
Adoption is all I could think of. Very good question though.

Biblically speaking, the link to David is found through Joseph (See Matthew 1:1-16). Joseph counts as Jesus' father connecting him to the lineage because he was chosen by God to be Jesus' foster father on earth.

Luke chapter 3 lists the lineage of Mary and demonstrates that she is in the line of David.

God said the Messiah would be of Tribe of Judah...which David was ....which Joseph and Mary both were...HE said it and IT WAS DONE....
there was a descendant in Joseph lineage , that for some WRONG, lost the right to be of the 'throne' lineage...The King would not come of Joseph's ancestors , the mans lineage....so it had to be of Mary's .....because HE simply said IT would be of Judah, and hey, 'the womans seed' , not the mans....it could of not come about for 'the seed of woman' Gen.3 , in the first place.....
reasons why the WOMAN serving God is so downplayed in the Bible as unimportant to God ...is machoism, and Jewish scribes and scholars throughout Biblical history has made this possible...
but the fact is WOMEN were IMPORTANT TO GOD ALSO and there were righteous ones...aplenty....
IT IS SAID....but just because we do not have a 'clear' lineage on Mary's side ,does not mean what HE said would not come to Pass,It would be the WAY HE said, just not the WAY men have ASSUMED and THOUGHT.. and can't answer for.and one of those reasons is MEN"S PRIDE.....but it will serve as a DETREMENTAL 'stumbling block' to many....Old to the New, Genisis to Rev., the Alpha to the Omega, is ONE of the most IMPORTANT PURPOSES for the WORD....the lineage of the Savior....which began in Genesis 3, the 'seed plot' of woman=Christ....

You're reading If the Messiah is from David's lineage, but Mary was a virgin and Joseph was not Jesus' biological father, then was Jesus from David's lineage? - which can also be phrased in the following ways:

  • How was Jesus born in the line of David when he had no earthly father and Mary was not of the line of David? (See Luke Chapter 1)
