  • It's late and I'm tired so please forgive the quick answer. Many historians as well as several contemporary officers believe that Rommel's abilities were overstated. He was gifted in his sense of initiative and speed of the offense, he was about 50/50 on risk assesment, but was sorely lacking in any sense of defense, logistics, or "big-picture" thinking. They also believe that the Allies were fortunate that it was reckless Rommel that commanded in Africa so as to "train" the Allied forces in modern war without the force necessary to actually win.
