I love the book in your avatar! But genetics are the stuff that makes you unique. You have some ununique genes that all living organisms have, and all humans have, but a small fraction of your genes give you your hair color, eye color, body stature... all those kinds of characteristics.

Essentially... genetics is the study of Genes - which are pieces of chromosomes - which make up your DNA. DNA is the "code" to your body, everything from your appearance to how likely you are to acquire certain diseases or defects.

Basically, inside your cells are the blueprints for more cells, and for all the other cells in your body and how they're going to be put together. Conception takes half the blueprints from mom and half the blueprints from dad and mashes them together. Some blueprints for certain traits are "dominant" or "recessive". Think of a recessive trait like half of a blueprint- unless you have both halves, it won't work, and the dominant blueprint will take over.

DNA (the building blocks of genetics) carry every jot of information about your physical and mental characteristics. This is handed down to you by your parents. DNA says what you shall look like and lays out a blueprint of your personality. Of course, then, after birth, your environment affects the genetic blueprint you carry. You end up being a combination of your genetic blueprint and your life experiences. I consider genetics to by your physical and psychological heritage.
