Assuming you mean the christian bible, Koran, Talmud, SunTzu's Art of War, TaoTe Tsing's Book of Virtue, Hammurabi's Code. These will give a good pre-bible (except for the Koran which is post christian bible) concept of human direction. There are others, but this will be a good start.

Just a really simple answer, but you could try the Message Bible or the Message Remix Bible. It's a modern English version of the Bible. It is incredibly easy to understand because it is written the way that we talk today. Hope this helps!

God's Plan For Man by Finis J Dake Sr. It's used as a text book in many Bible training centers.
