Help answer this question below.

What happens if I can't get the Windows updates for my computer? I had to get a new power supply and motherboard installed, which took out my legitimate version of Windows XP Home Edition, and the tech installed a different version.

I don't understand why you lost win xp home. You say that you only had the psu and mobo swapped out, leading me to assume that you never had to go up from less than a P4 up to P4. That would be the only reason for the tech to wipe the drive. Going from one P4 mbo to another P4 wouldn't require it. The existing Xp home, and new bios would just update themselves to the new config and at most require you to re activate it with microsoft because of the drastic change. If he did indeed boost you up to Xp Pro, he ought to have provided a legit OS disk. I'd go after him for it and insist he either give it to you for no charge (his error) or have him install your copy of Xp home, again at no cost.Additionally, I'd ask him where the backup of your data is.As far as updates go, has the tech already activated the copy of Pro? If not and you don't possess the cd key ,you won't be able to use the xp update feature after 30 days, for that matter even your PC.
Note:Microsoft's update page has undergone some changes recently, you may now be required to have that cd handy to prove you own it.I'm not sure as yet, but it's true of Office Pro now and may extend to the OS as well.
If he has activated it, you'll be able to update, assuming he used a legit copy of Pro, but he still owes you the install disk and key (make sure it's not a burned disk). I hope you haven't paid your bill yet and maybe it's best to shop around for another techie. This doesn't sound right at all.

If you click on this link http://www.connectionwizard.comoj.com/ and go to my malware removal section, there is detailed instructions that will help you. just click on the instructions link. the software is totally free and very easy instructions on using it. Everyone needs to get all the microsoft updates before the worm hits. Microsoft updates has a patch so you won't get it. I hear it's a bad one too. Tell your friends about this site when you are done. The site is currently under construction but I do have all the links for the software up and starting the instructions, now so be patient. Instructions for the first one are already in there.
