What words do you use when a pet is euthanized? (i.e. Put down, put to sleep, euthanized, killed, etc)

Put to sleep for me

I say "put down". Now I'm all sad, I remember when my dog was put down.

For horses, I have always used 'put down'. For dogs/cats I have always used 'put to sleep'. I have no idea why I use different terms.

I now say euthanised, having done a lot of work experience at vet clinics, and if I was in the clinic they say "pts" as their abbreviation.

Put to sleep, more soothing to the family.
