  • This all depends on the type of jeans you're buying. When they are made they're not generally washed before they're packaged for shipping. However, the jean material is washed before it's cut into the shapes which are sewn together to make the jeans. Usually as a rule of thumb though, washing them in cold water stops them from shrinking too much and washing them 2 - 3 times after buying them they'll usually do the shrinking then. Best bet is to wash in cold water for 2 - 3 times and then they shouldn't shrink when you wash them again unless the water you're washing them in is hot water then the outcome is unpredictable. Again it depends on the type of jeans you bought. Richard Shines
  • No. It is the cotton in denim that shrinks and it can only shrink so much. A few washes shrink them up as small as they're going to get permanently. This is why they feel tighter after a washing. When you wear them, they stretch out again. To stretch them out faster, dampen them slightly. If they feel like they keep getting smaller...watch out. You can lose muscle and gain fat (making you bigger) while remaining the same weight. Sorry, I know that doesn't sound kind!
  • Absolutely! I have purchased many jeans, that I wear on a regular basis. As a result, I have to wash them consistently and I have experienced shrinkage to the point that they no longer fit! I spoke with a representative at our local Levi store and she indicated that after consistent washing, the fibers 'bond' and the 'elasticity' component 'washes' away. Frustrating, I know!
  • Yep. That's why you should wash them in cold water and never, ever put them in the dryer. Hang them up on a clothes line or an indoor drying rack.
