It's inate. It's part of self preservation. We all feel fear that there will be negative consequences from our actions and in an action that is designed to save us from those consequence, we lie. That's how it starts. As we age, we learn which lies are useful and successful and which are not, teaching us to become more sophisticated liars.

A brilliant question. I can't really answer, but I can share my thoughts. Pesonally, I think it's down to how you think people will react to something. If you were treated badly as a child, and did something you weren't supposed to, you'd want to cover up the truth and avoid being shouted at or the like. Maybe...?

the ability to lie and the act of lying are two different things. The act of lying, I believe, is human nature. Children do it all the time to avoid trouble. The ability to lie (well) depends entirely on the kind of person you are, how much of a liar you are, and how much of an imagination you have.
