I heard of people tuning a C64 until it could run VERY basic internet stuff.

I'm not sure, but I had an old 8080 configured as a firewall at my church. It had no hard drive--the Linux OS, firewall, DHCP server, and an apache web server were loaded from a floppy disk at boot. I'm sure it could have run some basic Internet tools--a text-only web browser, IRC, telnet, etc. Really, any computer with networking hardware of any kind, whether a modem or a network adapter, should be able to connect to the Internet, though the tools available may be limited.

Whatever it is, it's probably in the possession of the US military or the Government - might have been used in ARPANET

I still have some old 1980's computer that only runs DOS somewhere in my closet. It has 512 kb for memory I remember.

Im running a ancient IRIS-3000. Runs fine online, limited, and slow, but it works.
