  • The Assemblies of God (AoG) is a Christian denomination, and is considered Pentecostal as well. Pentecostalism is not a denomination, but is instead a Christian movement. All Pentecostal groups have in common that they believe in the validity of the Bible, and believe in being "born again" - having a personal relationship with Jesus. Pentecostals place a special emphasis on gifts of the Holy Spirit and personal religious experiences - such as speaking in tongues, faith healing, and prophesying. Also, the large majority of Pentecostals come from a Wesleyan-Arminian background, instead of a Calvinist background. It's worth noting also that the Assemblies of God baptize the name of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), whereas some other Pentecostal groups baptize in the name of Jesus only (0neness Theology).
  • While many would say that the difference is that Pentecostals believe that you should be baptised in Jesus name only while the Assemblies of God (AG) baptises in the name of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost which is termed as trinitarian) this is not true. The Assemblies of God are merely a sect or denomination of the Pentecostal church. The term Pentecostal comes from the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended on the believers in the Upper Room and baptised them with fire and gave the gift of tongues. Along with the Assemblies of God, there are many, many, many different denominations that fall under the title of Pentecostal. For instance, I am a member of the Pentecostal Church of God (Joplin, MO) and we are trinitarian. There are also the Pentecostal Holiness (Oklahoma City, OK), The Church of God (Cleveland, TN), the Freewill Holiness (Independent), Full Gospel (trinitarian), Church of the Foursquare Gospel (Los Angeles, CA) and many others all of which are Trinitarian believers. There are also the United Pentecostal Church and the Apostolic Church and several others which are Jesus Name churches in that they baptise in Jesus name only.
  • The AG is pentecostal as well as The UPC/Apostolic Org. The tiff between them is the diff. It comes down to an arguement of terms...IE. Persons or Roles/modes and of course baptism. Neither of these should cause so much division but men and their pride goes a long way. I pastor a church in Ok. and I baptise in Jesus name and believe in the infilling of the Holy Ghost and still see other pentecostals as bro. in the Lord regardless of their badge.(trinity or oneness) I wear neither I preach Jesus because in the end his name is the only badge any of us should wear.
  • The Church of God in Christ was formed in 1897 by a group of disfellowshipped Baptists. The World Assemblies of God Fellowship or Assemblies of God who born out of the Church of God in Christ because of racial segregation. The oneness was force out of the A/G because of oneness issues. A few years later the Pentecostal Church of God was born because they did not want to associate with Assembly of God. The Pentecostal Holiness Church was form from a Methodist minister who now is a A/G member. You would say a Methodist who turned pentecostal though Methodist where known for being enthusiastic. But because the methodist believe in perfection living is how it become known for being Pentecostal Holiness.
