i personally think that it is a big mistake to allow a 16 year old to be allowed to drive. recent research done on the human brain shows that the teenage brain has much developing to do. the human brain is now considered fully developed until it is well into its late twenties. with that in mind it is no wonder why teenagers do not have the capacity to think things through. instead of being irate with them, this should help us to understand that age group. at the same time we should therefore think twice before we allow them to take on serious responsabilities such as getting behind the wheel. we have two kids and both did not get their licenses until well into their late teens. i know it is a major pain in-the-you-know-where, because you have to be driving them around everywhere, but it is for their own good, as well as for the safety of others.

There should be qualifications to be sure, however I have been driving since I turned 16 (which really isn't a reasonable amount of time, but still) and I have yet to get more than a speeding ticket.

Here they have to take a course, both in and out of the car. They have to have at least 200 hours in car with a liscened driver and at least 50 need to be at night. What other qualifications are you looking for? There are plenty of 30 year old I wouldn't put behind the wheel of a car.

There is, its called a test to get the license.

No not everyone, of course. These are the same 16 year olds whom can not determine what colour pants to wear with their shirt for the day, how can they be (automatically) expected to be able to safely and properly operate a 4,000 rocket-sled-of-death? Clearly the driving exams are too lax in the States, I believe (correct if I am wrong) the driving requirements are much stricter in Germany; indeed although they drive much faster on their autobahn, they also have far less fatalities than Americans. Why?... because they much more often follow the rules of the road.
