Why do some people wear expensive wedding bands made of platinum when it looks just like silver or white gold?

Because no matter what it looks like, they know they got the best! Kind of like people who like name brand products instead of the off brands.

It's a matter of personal taste or it depends upon how materialistic the spouse (male or female) is...some people just demand to be treated like royalty. I personally don't buy into that type of manipulation. Purchases on this level should be based on what can be afforded.

I guess they just do it to be pretentious because sterling silver is much cheaper and shinier. Platinum is actually pretty dull; it's only expensive because it's so rare.

Well, the obvious answer is that it is rarer. It's also more durable and scratch resistant than both silver and gold. I think wearing platinum has less to do with snooty pretentiousness (though that is certainly a factor in many cases) wanting to buy the best. If quality wasn't a factor, more people would be content with costume jewelry than "the real thing." However, for something as meaningful as a wedding ring, people like the idea of longevity. A ring made out of such platinum and diamond with retain its splendor and, in theory, make a good heirloom. On side note, people should spend according to their means. While a platinum ring is superior in quality, what ultimately matters is the love between the ring giver and recipient. If you can afford platinum, buy platinum. If not, buy gold (which is also beautiful) and use the difference towards something of more value to you, such as a down payment on a house. Buying something beyond your means simply for the sake of keeping up with the Joneses is more than just pretentious, it is stupid.

Because, you are getting married. If this person does love you so much, they are going to know to buy you the best. And in my opinion I would go for Platinum any day over white gold or silver, in my opinion it does look better.
