Why do pandas seem to be named the same name twice? Ling Ling, Yum Yum, etc. Honest question, is there some method in the Chinese language for naming in this pattern?

The names repeated are just for cuteness and informality. People do this when naming toys, animals, story characters etc.

Chinese is very different from Western languages...repetion, among other things is used to stress something... as: ren means a person..ren ren means everyone...man means slow ...man man means very slowly...the chinese language also seems to like 2 sounds together..it gives the language its characteristic 'sing-song' sound.

Many terms for things are also repetitive, like in the family; nai nai, ye ye, ma ma, ba ba, ge ge, jie jie, mei mei, di di, shu shu, etc... tai tai means mrs. after a surname, like Wong tai tai. you can say yi dian dian to mean "a little". Xie xie, of course, means thank you.
